about
When cellist Trace Johnson and I first began our exploration of Hildegard's composition, O frondens virga, we talked about how his drone track might evoke the experience of walking in the forest. The soundscape that Trace created is beyond anything I could have imagined. Layers of baroque cello conjure dappled sunlight falling through gently rustling leaves. In a clearing stands a solitary, magnificent tree. We are moved to stop and gaze in wonder, breathing in the forest sounds and damp, earthy air. Gentle breezes from Justin Ouellet's viola waft through the scene, enlivening our meditative trance.
Today, in celebration of St. Hildegard Day, please accept this track as my gift — to all who treasure our beautiful, natural world.
lyrics
O leafy branch,
standing in your nobility
as the dawn breaks forth:
now rejoice and be glad
and deign to set us frail ones
free from evil habits
stretch forth your hand and lift us up.
Unto ages of ages, Amen
